National Coming Out Day
I lived with my Mom up till I was 20 which was back in 1987. She did not know I was gay, even with my Olivia Newton John leg warmers, and Gloria Estefan hair! She just assumed, I was difficult to get along with and I would be single for the rest of my life. Sadly it's true to this day. Anyway, flash forward to 2011, I was 44 living in Bushkill, PA with Tyrone, and at this point we have been inseparable since 2001. Tyrone being close to my mom, decided to call her at 3 a.m. drunk as a skunk. He said, stumbling on his words, "I have to tell you something, but I don't want you to hate me". My mother is thinking the worst at this late hour. Could he be a murderer? Does the corner Deli deliver this late? She says, "tell me what's wrong, what is going on?". He says, "I am gay, I hope you still love me". My mom says, "oh Tyrone, I love you and you know you can always tell me anything, and I will always be here for you.".
The next day, I called my mom and she said, "I had an interesting conversation with Tyrone last night." I knew she was going to want to discuss this with me! I said, "I know... he told me". She then said, "is there anything YOU want to tell me?". I paused for what felt like a lifetime, and said, "If I said I was gay, how would you react?". She said..."Well, I hear it's all the rage." .....
......And just like that, I finally came out.
WHAT'S YOUR STORY?
